Oak Trees and Pollarding

Trees, MHHL sometimes have to Pollard Oak trees that are too big and have spread out too far. It's normally very successful I have attached two photos one showing a tree that has been pollarded in 2016 and one taken today of the tree. This particular tree had spread it branches far too wide and consequently needed work to prevent it becoming a problem.
Volunteers were working on a Tree to the rear of Westland, which was far too close to a boundary and had spread its branches over the householders lawn. We always leaflet immediate neighbours and it was confirmed by one of the neighbours this morning he had had one hand delivered.
The work to complete the pollarding will continue over the next few weekends.
Pollarding Oaks is a normal form of mangement and indeed many years ago Natural England pollarded several trees on the path down to Keyson Point. It's always a bit worrying when you see the initial results ie something that looks like a Totem Pole but it is necessary and the end results are good and way better than removing the tree.
